چکیده

The objectives of this task are both to conduct research on seismic hazards, and to provide relevant input on the expected levels of these hazards to other tasks. Other tasks requiring this input include those dealing with inventory, fragility curves, rehabilitation strategies and demonstration projects. The corresponding input is provided in various formats depending on the intended use: either as peak ground motion parameters and/or response spectral values for given magnitude, epicentral distance and site conditions; or as time histories for scenario earthquakes that are selected based on the disaggregated seismic hazard mapped by the U.S. Geological Survey and used in the NEHRP Recommended Provisions for the Development of Seismic Regulations for New Buildings (BSSC, 1998).

Hybrid Empirical Ground Motion Model for Pga and 5% Dampedlinear Elastic Response Spectra from Shallow Crustal Earthquakes in Stable Continental Regions: Example for Eastern North America

The widespread application of the hybrid empirical method (HEM) has made it a viable approach for developing ground motion prediction equations in regions where there are few strong motion recordings but there are ample weak motion data from small-magnitude earthquakes. The HEM uses empirical estimates of ground motion in one region (the host region) to provide estimates of ground motion in ano...

Ground-Motion Prediction Equations for Eastern North America from a Referenced Empirical Approach: Implications for Epistemic Uncertainty

I outline a referenced empirical approach to the development of groundmotion prediction equations (GMPEs). The technique is illustrated by using it to develop GMPEs for eastern North America (ENA). The approach combines the ENA ground-motion database with the empirical prediction equations of Boore and Atkinson (2008) for the reference region of western North America (WNA). The referenced empir...

Prediction of Strong Ground Motion Using the Hybrid Empirical Method and Its Use in the Development of Ground-Motion (Attenuation) Relations in Eastern North America

Ground-motion (attenuation) relations are used to estimate strong ground motion for many engineering and seismological applications. Where strongmotion recordings are abundant, these relations are developed empirically from strong-motion recordings. Where recordings are limited, they are often developed from seismological models using stochastic and theoretical methods. However, there is a larg...

Observations on regional variability in ground-motion amplitudes for small-to-moderate earthquakes in North America

The regional variability in earthquake ground-motion amplitudes for a given magnitude and distance in western North American environments was examined using ShakeMap data from small-to-moderate events. The abundance of data for small-tomoderate events in California allows average ground-motion levels, as a function of magnitude and distance, to be resolved with a high level of confidence. Groun...
